Renault Admit They're Behind The Pace in 2018

The 2018 Formula One Season hasn't even got away yet and Renault have already laid down expectation for the upcoming year.

Bosses at Renault have admitted that the 'chassis deficit' is too large to tackle this season and are looking ahead to 2019 to level the playing field against customer teams Red Bull and McLaren.

The French outfit improved markedly last year, picking up five top-six finishes and finishing in 6th place in the Constructors table. However, they finished 300 points behind Red Bull, a deficit they will no doubt want to cut in 2018 to avoid embarrassment of a customer team out-performing its parent manufacturer.

In 2019, Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul has suggested his team are eyeing up a top-five finish:

"We are still a work in progress, we are still growing up and still in the process of building our own team.

I think it's not before 2019 that we can be in a position to fully match them, even if I would like to see a very small gap between us and them in the process this year."
